FAQs

1. Is it necessary to haggle prices in Vietnam ?

Make your experience and have a sense of the situation by making purchases. After a few days, you will have a better understanding of how much things cost. Try to get a feel for the situation when making a purchase. Do not hesitate to offer a price two to three times lower than the asking price. If the price is unclear, or not visible, just ask the seller.

2. Is Vietnam a safe place to travel ?

Vietnam is generally considered a very safe place to travel. But common sense prevails, so avoid travelling with jewellery and other valuable items.

3. What do I do if I lose my passport ?

You must first contact the nearest police station to make a statement, then your Embassy, with some form of identification. A new passport (check the price with the Embassy Consular staff) is usually available within a few days.

4. What must I not bring into Vietnam ?

It is forbidden to bring weapons, munitions, explosives, fire-arms, fire-crackers or fireworks of any description into Vietnam, so too toxic chemical substances, anything deemed hostile to the government and pornography. Opium and all other drugs are also illegal. You may not take valuable antiques out of the country. If you buy pottery or porcelain that has been made to look antique, be sure to get a receipt at the time and place of purchase clearly stating that the object has no historical or cultural value.

5. What clothes should I bring ?

What you wear depends largely on the season you travel. However, you are expected to dress conservatively. We advise you to bring light cotton clothes, but pack something warm for colder evenings (and to protect you from air-conditioning on buses and in hotels. A lightweight waterproof jacket is also recommended. At certain religious sites, it is inappropriate to wear shorts; your shoulders must be covered and you will be asked to remove your shoes.
Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, swimming trunks and high-factor sunscreen. A pocket torch is not a bad idea either.
