The North East 14 days

The North East of Vietnam is notable for its stunning natural wonders and ethnic diversity. This original itinerary includes Ba Be lake, followed by Cao Bang and the legendary Highway 4. Further to the North, we will explore one of the lesser known regions, right on the Chinese border. A unique experience!

Day 1 : Arrival in Hanoi (D)

You will be met at the airport. Afternoon cyclo tour of the Old Quarter. Evening meal at a restaurant.

Day 2 : Hanoi / Ba Be (B,L,D)

We leave Hanoi in the morning for Thai Nguyen and Ba Be lake. Lunch at Bac Can. Arrive at Ba Be in the afternoon. The lake is a hidden wonder amidst a stunning backdrop. Visit the Tay village of Pac Ngoi.  Homestay in a typical Tay house on stilts, overlooking the lake.

Day 3 : Ba Be / Cao Bang (B,L,D)

Discover Ba Be lake and its surroundings, home to the H’mong and Dzao minorities. We will travel across the lake (3h) to the waterfalls at Dau Dang  There follows a hillside walk to the Poung cave, which is home to an impressive colony of bats. Later we travel by car to Cao Bang with stops on the way to visit the local villages. Overnight in Cao Bang.

Day 4 : Cao Bang / Ban Gioc / Cao Bang (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we visit a typical ethnic market (during the weekend or every 5th, 10th and 20th of each month of the lunar calendar) followed by the superb caves of Nguom Ngao, before reaching the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc on the Chinese border. Back to Cao Bang in the afternoon, stopping in the blacksmiths’ village of Phuc Sen. Overnight in Cao Bang.

Day 5 : Cao Bang / Bao Lac ( B, L , D)

The road to Bao Lac runs alongside beautiful valleys covered in bamboo, and steep mountains. Depending on the date, it may be possible to visit a local market on the way. Closer to Bao Lac, you will meet White H’mong, Lolos, Nung and Tay people. Overnight at an inn in Bao Lac.

Day 6 : Bao Lac / Ha Giang (B, L, D)

Walk in Bao Lac to meet local minorities. Then travel to Ha Giang

Day 7 : Ha Giang / Dong Van ( B, L, D)

After breakfast, we leave for Dong Van on a precipitous road that winds between breathtaking karstic peaks. Stop in Bo Y village and the staggering karstic wonder of Binh Yen before arriving in Quan Be. In the H’mong village of Lung Tam, you will see displays of traditional weaving and stitching. Lunch in Yen Minh ; then onwards towards Dong Van, via Meo Vac, through steep, wooded mountains and the impressive Ma Pi Leng Pass. In Dong Van, check-in at the hotel, then you are free to stroll around the streets of this old market town.

Day 8 : Dong Van  / Pho Bang / Yen Minh ( B, L, D)

After breakfast, visit Dong Van and Saphin markets and the Ancient Palace of the H’mong (Vua Meo) before travelling the ancient road of Pho Bang.  Discover multi-storied clay houses with tiled roofs. At the weekend, you can shop at a typical mountain market. Lunch. In the afternoon, a visit to the minority village near Yen Minh concludes with a tour of the local distillery where the traditional wine, Thanh Van, is made from corn.  Overnight in Yen Minh.

Day 9 : Yen Minh / Ha Giang

Back to Ha Giang after breakfast. On the way, we will stop in H’Mong and Dao villages, and at Paradise Gate, 1,500m above sea level, sitting between two valleys. In the afternoon, a visit to the magnificent village of Phuong Do reveals charming stilt houses overlooking the rice fields and a fishing lake. Overnight in Ha Giang.

Day 10 : Ha Giang / Hanoi (B,L)

Travel back towards Hanoi in the morning. Lunch. Arrival in Hanoi late afternoon.

Day 11 : Hanoi / Halong Bay

Morning departure towards Halong Bay. Board the junk for an unforgetable journey across the emerald bay. Seafood dinner and overnight on the junk.

Day 12 : Halong Bay / Cat Ba

Cruise across the bay in the morning. Take a boat to discover the village located in the middle of the bay : Lan Ha. The inhabitants make a living from fishing and will move their houses across the bay on fishing boats to find shelter from the storms.

Day 13 : Cat Ba / Hanoi

We take the morning ferry for Haiphong. After taking time to visit the colonial district, the Du Hang pagoda and the community hall, we travel back to Hanoi. This gives us the afternoon to see the best of Vietnam’s capital city: the Temple of Literature - dedicated to the teachings of Confucius - the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh and his stilt house, and the Tran Quoc pagoda situated in West Lake. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 14: Departure from Hanoi

On the way to the airport, we visit the Museum of Ethnography. Here you will find a comprehensive collection with detailed information about Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups.
